At Napa Valley College, your life experience matters. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) lets you turn your skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience into college credit—no extra classes required.
Your knowledge and abilities can be assessed in the following ways:
- Approved standardized examinations:
- Advanced Placement (AP) examination,
- International Baccalaureate (IB) examination
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- Military Service/Training
- Industry Recognized Credential Documentation
- Student-created Portfolios
- Industry Examination Administered by Other Agencies
- Institutional Examination
- Work-based Learning
What is Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)?
- Credit for prior learning is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom. By providing comprehensive processes for obtaining credit for prior learning, community colleges can increase completion rates and further their mission of open-access education.

Napa Valley College students may receive college credit for prior learning in Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) identified courses listed in the current college catalog through the approved alternative methods for awarding credit listed above.
