Program Description

The purpose of this program is for students to learn Spanish as a first or second language so they can communicate successfully with the Spanish-speaking world, and understand and appreciate the Hispanic cultures.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:

  1. Communicate orally and in writing in Spanish in real life situations.
  2. Read and comprehend Spanish at levels commensurate with those of students seeking a degree in Spanish.
  3. Understand the Hispanic cultures, through the study of their history, literature, arts, contributions of prominent figures, and foreign travel.

Please Note: All students planning to obtain an A.A. Degree in Spanish must meet with a full-time instructor in the department to establish the appropriate emphasis. In addition to the General Education Requirements as stated in the College Catalogue, the student must complete a total of 19-24 units distributed among Sections 1 and 2 as stated below.

  • Spanish 120 ( 5 units) or Spanish 110  and Spanish 111 
  • Spanish 121 (5 units)

  1. Electives for Non-Heritage Speakers of Spanish(3 units)
  • Spanish 130, 131, 260 or 261 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the summer through our Spanish Study Abroad Program.
  • Spanish 282 (3 units) *You MUST register early for this course. Offered ONLY in the Fall and in the summer through our Spanish study abroad program.
  • Anthropology 121 (3 units)
  • Anthropology 200 (3 units) 
  • Anthropology 131 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Spring. Register early for this course.
  • History 142 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered every other Fall semester. Register early for this course.

Total units: 20 -24 units
