Work Study Information

The Work Study Program at Napa Valley College allows eligible students to gain valuable work experience and earn money while attending school.  A work study award is a form of "self-help" financial aid that provides employment opportunities for students who need financial assistance in order to meet college expenses.  Work study jobs are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week, but usually have flexible hours to accommodate a student's academic schedule.  Jobs are not guaranteed and eligibility to work must be renewed each academic year.

Types of Work Study Funding

The Work Study Program utilizes several types of funding to pay student work study earnings.  These different types of funding are often combined to increase the length of time and number of hours a student may work.  Students who submit the FAFSA have a greater opportunity to qualify for multiple work study funding sources, while those who qualify for only one type of funding may be limited in the number of weeks and hours they are allowed to work.

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally funded program. FWS funding is limited, so not all students who receive a work study award will be able to work.  Students who submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and check the "interested in work study" box are automatically considered for federal work study awards.

Federal Work Study Eligibility

  • Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Demonstrated financial need.

Students must submit all required documentation necessary to complete their financial aid file in order to determine their financial need and eligibility for Federal Work Study.  NOTE: For priority consideration, submit the FAFSA by March 2nd every year!

Federal Work Study Benefits

A work study award does not guarantee employment, but has benefits not available in regular employment: work study income is not included when financial aid need is determined each year, so eligibility for other types of financial aid may increase, such as scholarships, grants, or subsidized loans.

Napa Valley College (NVC) provides a limited amount of District funding for the Work Study Program and is designed to extend part-time employment opportunities to students who need financial assistance in order to meet college expenses.
