"Starfish brings to mind the parable of the blind men and the elephant which cautions against the human tendency to prioritize our own perspective as an objective truth. The parable shows the profound misunderstanding that can occur as a result of seeking understanding with too narrow a focus and without the input of diverse perspectives.
As a mathematics instructor obviously my number one goal is helping students to confidently wield their inherent mathematical talent. With this type of hyper-focus on one aspect of a person it can be easy to forget that the student is part of a larger network within the college as well as their community and family.
I believe adoption of Starfish offers an opportunity to greatly enhance the effectiveness of the student focused mindset that is already a cornerstone of the NVC mission.
Good technology encourages good practice: By easing communication among colleagues and facilitating teamwork around students Starfish offers a way to leverage technology for student success. "

"Starfish is very instrumental in collecting feedback from faculty and most importantly connecting students to counselors, and resources they need to be successful. I am very thankful for the feedback and progress surveys, we in EOPS received from professors. I share the kudos to students to acknowledge their accomplishments this semester. I send emails to my students with flags in Starfish to let them know that I received feedback from their professor(s) and I want to discuss it with them. When they schedule a meeting, we go over the progress surveys and create a plan to help resolve any issues. I refer or connect them to resources that could help them get through this semester. The email function opens a new channel of communication with students. When I close the loop with a student, I send an email to the professors to thank them for providing feedback and completing the survey. Last week, a professor called me about a student who is going through personal struggles. I was very thankful because we were able to find a way to help the student. The professor also mentioned about the email I sent her when I discussed a flag and closed the loop with the student. This, I think, is my highlight using Starfish. I try to remember opening Starfish when I meet with students. Even if there is no feedback received during that time, I can still show them what Starfish is. The resources and connections are valuable to students."
