Which assessment test does NVC administer for English placement?
Napa Valley College administers the California Test for English Placement (CTEP) test.
What is the test like?
A practice test is available to prepare and familiarize yourself with the types of questions that will be on the test. The test will take a maximum of 75 minutes and is divided into three sections. All sections must be completed in one sitting.
How is the test scored?
Placement is based on the composite score (sum of reading and writing score). The following are the cut scores used to determine placement for English:
0-11: Referral to Learning Services
0-35: Student must take the English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) test for placement
(student indicated that English is not their first language on exam)
12-35: English 12/16/18
36-40: English 17/19/60
41-58: English 85 (Basic English Writing)
59-84: English 90 (Prep for College Level English)
85-105: English 120 (College Level English)
When do I receive my results?
Results are presented to the student immediately after testing. Test scores are entered into student records within 24 hours of testing.
Can I retake this test?
The CTEP may be taken twice in a two year period; however, there is a mandatory two week waiting period between attempts.
How long are results valid?
Results are valid for three years.
What if I have or had an IEP or 504?
If you had an IEP or 504, please see the DSPS department to determine appropriate accommodations.
Can I use my SAT or AP scores to exempt me from the assessment test?
Napa Valley College does not accept SAT or AP scores in place of the assessment test.
Can I challenge my placement?
