My name is Elizabeth Lara-Medrano, I am truly excited to return to Napa Valley College as HSI STEM Counselor. I obtained an Associates of Science in Natural Science and Mathematics at Napa Valley College, where I participated in MESA, SSS, and EOPS Programs in addition to several student clubs and organizations such as MESA and Chicano Americano Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. As a student at NVC, I majored in Computer Engineering and transferred to University of California Davis-College of Engineering. I later changed my major and obtained a Bachelor’s of Arts in Sociology and minor in Chicano Latino Studies; I have Masters of Arts Degree from Saint Mary’s College of California in Career Counseling and College Student Services. As a first generation Latina, I know the personal obstacles that face low income students, especially those who are the first of their family to explore the many potential rewards and hardships of obtaining a degree in STEM. Let me assist you along that path.
As a bilingual, English/Spanish Counselor, I am ready to work with bilingual students interested in Science, Technology, Science and Engineering (STEM) majors. My goal is to increase STEM awareness at Napa Valley College particularly among Hispanic students and increase the number of students who declare their major in a STEM field. As STEM counselor, I will work with ALL students in attaining their career goals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors by providing them specialized academic counseling and referrals to appropriate services as needed to ensure their success. I bring over 4 years of experience in Community College Counseling and have a true passion for academic, career, and transfer counseling and student success. My work experience includes working at Napa Valley College as Career Center Interim Counselor/Coordinator, Adjunct ESL and General Counselor, and Counseling Instructor both at the main Campus and at the Upper Valley Campus. I have worked at Woodland Community College for the last three years as CalWORKs Counselor/Coordinator. I have also worked at the local public high schools and middle schools as School Secondary Advisor through Migrant Education, and I am very familiar with Napa Valley Community.
