Information Competency Program

The Library's Information Competency Program is dedicated to ensuring that all Napa Valley College students are able to effectively navigate the vast amount of information available in a digital society. To meet this goal, the library provides a range of instructional tools designed to meet the general and discipline-specific needs of students and faculty. These tools include curriculum-integrated information fluency sessions, a 12-week class (ENGL 298), reference assistance, and individual research consultation.

Beginning fall 2009, the Library will offer a one-unit Information Competency/Research Methods course. The course will be linked with English 120 initially and then offered as a stand-alone course in response to student demand. The course is called Introduction to Library Research (ENGL 298) and is 1 unit. The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the skills needed to find, evaluate, use and communicate information in print, electronic and Internet format. The course meets Tuesdays from 1:30-2:50 p.m. from 9/18/09 through 12/08/09 in room 1537. Librarians Stephanie Grohs and Nancy McEnery offer the course. Students must be concurrently enrolled in English 120.
