Registration still open for Latino Youth Leadership Conference 

Efren Carrillo, a member of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, will be a keynote speaker for the 26th annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference at Napa Valley College. According to a recent story in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, he is the county's first Latino supervisor. The son of immigrants, he is 28-years-old.

The event, which is free, will be Saturday, March 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Napa campus. It is sponsored by Napa Valley College EOPS, NVC’s Educational Talent Search and Napa County Migrant Education.

“The purpose of the conference is to motivate and guide young Latinos students to persist with their studies and to make the effort to continue their studies at a postsecondary level. During the day there will workshops that will be addressing topics such as career and educational awareness, a panel of university representatives to speak about the admissions process for higher education, a student panel to talk about their experiences being in college, a workshop that will address culture and heritage, and a workshop for Latino parents to inform them about the opportunities that their children can attain through a college education,” said Hector Brambila, EOPS Specialist in the Financial Aid Office.

There will also be a resource fair in the early morning part of the conference, where there will be information tables from various service agencies in Napa County.

All middle school students and high school students are invited and some 100 to150 are expected to attend. Registration has been extended to the date of the conference. Call 707-253-3034 for registration or more information. The event will also include lunch and music.
