Welcome to the Adult Basic Education Certificate Program at Napa Valley College
Adult Basic Education classes and programs are intended to serve proficient English speakers to gain the skills needed to successfully earn a diploma or GED and high school graduates who lack the skills need to succeed in postsecondary education. Noncredit ABEN classes are designed for individuals and small groups to practice basic skills in reading, writing, math and critical thinking. To obtain a Certificate of Competency, students must successfully pass at least two ABEN courses and earn a placement test score required for entry into college-level credit Math and English classes.
NONCREDIT ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES
ABEN-600: Adult Basic Education - This basic skills course for adults will include foundation work and practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing, critical thinking and math. The class has an all inclusive format of individualized instruction and study group work for improvement and increased proficiency in adult basic skills. The course objective is to prepare students for continuing education, GED, college and future careers.
ABEN-650: GED Preparation - This course will prepare individuals to successfully complete the high school equivalency examination. The course materials covered in this class will be math, social science, English, natural science and literature.
ABEN-800: Citizenship - This course is designed to help prepare you for the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) Interview/Exam. The class will cover topics on U.S. history, federal state and local government, and the structure of our political system. Students will also review frequently asked questions and practice reading and writing English.
