AA Degree Major in Spanish
Program Description
The purpose of this program is for students to learn Spanish as a first or second language so they can communicate successfully with the Spanish-speaking world, and understand and appreciate the Hispanic cultures.
Program Level Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:
1. Communicate orally and in writing in Spanish in real life situations.
2. Read and comprehend Spanish at levels commensurate with those of students seeking a degree in Spanish.
3. Understand the Hispanic cultures, through the study of their history, literature, arts, contributions of prominent figures, and foreign travel.
Please Note: All students planning to obtain an A.A. Degree in Spanish must meet with a full-time instructor in the department to establish an individual plan. In addition to the General Education Requirements as stated in the College Catalogue, the student must complete a total of 23-25 units distributed among Sections 1 and 2 as stated below.
EMPHASIS FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH
1. Required courses for Non-Native Speakers of Spanish (20 to 22 units)
· Spanish 120( 5 units) or Spanish 110 (3 units) and Spanish 111 (3 units)
· Spanish 121 (5 units) or Spanish 114 (3 units) and Spanish 116 (3 units)
· Spanish 240 or 280 (5 units)
· Spanish 241 or 281 (5 units)
2. Electives for Non-Native Speakers of Spanish (3 units)
· Spanish 130 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Fall. You MUST register early for this course.
· Spanish 131 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Spring. You MUST register early for this course.
· Anthropology 131 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Spring. You MUST register early for this course.
· History 142 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Fall. You MUST register early for this course.
Total units: 23 -25 units

1. Required course for Heritage Speakers (16 units)
· Spanish 280 (5 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Fall. You MUST register early for this course.
· Spanish 281 (5 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Spring. You MUST register early for this course.
· Spanish 282 (3 units) *You MUST register early for this course. Offered once a year but could be offered every other Fall Semester depending on our budget.
· History 142 (3 units) *Generally ONLY offered in the Fall. You MUST register early for this course.
2. Electives for Heritage Speakers (6 units) Please select two from the list below.
